I have been thinking about this for a while. A lot of people tell me they want a business, but when you ask what kind, they have no idea. That is not because there are no opportunities. It is because most people start with the wrong question.
They start with, “What business should I start?” I think the better question is, “What business actually fits me?” That is why we built this new course. It starts by evaluating you first, then the business second.
We look at your skills, experience, resources, limitations, available time, risk tolerance, things you hate doing and the kind of life you want the business to fit into. Only then do we start looking at actual opportunities. That matters because I have seen plenty of businesses fail that were not bad businesses. They were bad fits for the person running them.
I have been running businesses since I was in my 20s, small and large, part time and full time, and I have consulted with a lot of business owners along the way. Sometimes a founder weakness can be solved with a system, a tool, a contractor or an employee. Sometimes it means you should kill the idea and move on. We built that into the process.
Once we find businesses that appear to fit, we look at the economics, the customer, the market and the path to first revenue. Then we red team the business and ask why it could fail. After that we red team the founder and ask why this specific person could fail at running it. By the end you have one primary business, one backup and a practical 60 day startup plan.
